Variegata Myeongdong is located in the (former) Bank of Korea Soongwon Annex. Having a restaurant in the basement of such a historically and financially significant building offers visitors a unique and serendipitous experience.
The space concept is 'Grotta.' 'Grotta' is Italian for sea cave, and this concept was chosen to reflect the sense of hidden specialness that parallels the site’s unique qualities, akin to a cave formed by the waves.
The ambiance is characterized by low overall lighting, with localized illumination highlighting areas where people’s attention and movement linger. This approach metaphorically emphasizes the intense light that filters into a cave.
For the materials, the main walls are finished with a special paint that mimics the texture of rock, while the ceiling is painted in a complementary beige tone. Furniture is finished with black veneer and wrought iron. The large table and line pendant light at the entrance are designed with the imagery of an old ship found in a sea cave, incorporating rough and analog details.
These design elements shape the distinctive identity and atmosphere of Bariegata, offering a profound experience. Through the 'Grotta' concept, Variegata Myeongdong visually merges history with modernity, providing visitors with more than just a meal, but a memorable and meaningful experience.
