'décidé' is a French word meaning 'definite, distinct and clear', and is a bakery cafe selling French desserts. ‘décidé’, located between the alleys of Bukchon Hanok Village, would resemble the quiet emotion of the surrounding hanok, we intended to express it by reinterpreting it in a modern way.
Inspiration from the sharpness of a single stroke of ink drawn without hesitation on Hanji, the Korean traditional paper was connected to atypical elements in a neat design. First, the ivory tone color that forms the façade of the building is made of soft but rough textured stucco. Here, a smooth canopy of zinc metal and a column with a rough surface supporting it are bound together with a beam structure protruding from the inside and a low wall. This is a modern reassembly of elements of a hanok structure, such as rafters and inner and outer walls, and intends to show it in a form with a sense of mass. When you enter through the mass that came out like a gate, the glass door at the entrance is hung with a metal material that looks like it was made by a craftsman.
As with any building in the old alley, the site we first encountered bears traces of time. It was the walls and floors that were repeatedly demolished and built, low ceilings, and old pipes that were not in use from the upper floors. The non-demolition pipe that came down to the middle of the space was wrapped around and made into a pillar, and starting from this boundary, the interior layout began, dividing the seating, bar and kitchen. We thought about how to bring yang into this space, which can feel stuffy and gloomy. There must be a limit to the light that comes in through the window. Natural light is artificially expressed to create light shining down throughout the space and to show what is beyond the ceiling. We tried to create a sense of expansion in the space by blurring the boundary between the wall and the ceiling. Tone-on-tone colors are given to the overall formal form to create a neat composition, while adding shapes, textures, colors, and handicraft elements. Through such a simple arrangement, it increases the usability and at the same time gives a point to the mood with an atypical one.
The atmosphere inside the intended space to feel like a gallery. Each object has a role to catch people's attention like a work of art. These sculptures are placed carelessly on the floor, such as cream-colored smooth masses and standardized wooden masses, to calmly relax the atmosphere while holding the weight of the space. The overall space is composed of these heavy masses and the refined flow surrounding them.
It was intended to relieve the heaviness through a contrasting sculpture that rises between these low and heavy masses. Like a tree branch growing carelessly in nature, the form stretched out toward the sky gives a vertically extended sense of space through the subtly reflective ceiling surface. Just as moss and annual rings grow over time in nature, the metal surface was intended to get rusted and aged over time, trying to reveal its presence in the midst of refined things. As natural light from the sky falls from the ceiling through which the object is penetrated, the overall light falls and directs the gaze to the rear, allowing a sense of depth in a large, not high space. Just as a clear thing shines more when it is accompanied by a blur, the clear lines and weights in the quiet blur harmonize with the refined background. In this way, the boundaries of the artificial surroundings are blurred, forming a single harmony with the rising natural lines.
As clear strokes of ink are drawn on Hanji, hope ‘décidé’ to permeate Bukchon in a clear and quiet way.
‘décidé (데시데)’는 ‘분명한, 뚜렷하고 명확한’ 의 뜻을 갖는 불어로, 프랑스 디저트류를 판매하는 베이커리 카페이다. 북촌 한옥마을 골목 사이에 위치한 ‘décidé (데시데)’가 주변 한옥이 주는 고즈넉한 정서를 닮았으면 좋겠다고 생각했고, 이를 모던하게 재해석하여 표현하고자 했다.
한지 위 거침없이 그어진 먹 한 획이 주는 뚜렷함에서 얻은 영감은 정갈한 디자인 속 비정형적인 요소로 연결되었다. 먼저 건물의 파사드(façade)를 이루는 아이보리 톤의 색감은 부드럽되 거친 질감의 스터코(stucco)로 이루어진다. 여기에 아연 금속(zinc)의 매끈한 캐노피(canopy)와 이를 받치고 있는 거친 표면을 가진 기둥은 내부에서부터 튀어 나온 보 구조, 낮은 벽체와 함께 결속되어 있다. 이는 서까래와 내외담 같은 한옥 구조의 요소를 모던하게 재조립한 것으로, 매스감 있는 형태로써 보여주고자 한다. 대문처럼 마중 나온 덩어리를 통해 들어가면 출입구 유리도어에는 장인이 한땀한땀 두들겨 만든 것 같은 금속 소재가 걸려 있다.
오래된 골목의 여느 건물이 그렇듯 처음 마주한 현장은 세월의 흔적을 지니고 있었다. 부수고 짓기를 반복한 벽과 바닥, 낮은 천장, 위층에서부터 내려오는 사용여부 모를 오래된 배관들 이었다. 공간 한가운데로 내려온 철거가 불가한 배관을 감싸 기둥으로 만들고, 이 경계를 시작으로 내부 배치가 시작되어 좌석과 바, 주방을 나누었다. 자칫 답답하고 음하게 느껴질 수 있는 이 공간에 어떻게 양기를 들일 수 있을지 고민했다.
창문으로 유입되는 빛만으로는 한계가 있으리라, 자연광을 인공적으로 표현해 공간 곳곳에 내리쬐는 빛을 만들어주고 천장 너머에 무엇이 있어 보이도록 했다. 우선 벽과 천장의 경계를 흐려 보이게 하여 공간에 확장감을 만들어주고자 했다. 전체적으로 정형적인 형태에 톤온톤의 색감을 주어 깔끔하게 구성하는 한편, 모양이나 질감과 색 그리고 수공예적 요소를 첨가했다. 그렇게 단순한 배치를 통하여 활용도를 높이는 동시에 비정형적인것으로 무드에 포인트를 준다.
그렇게 의도한 공간 내부의 분위기는 갤러리의 느낌이 났으면 했다. 각기의 오브제들은 작품처럼 사람들의 시선을 잡아주는 역할을 갖는다. 이 조형물들은 크림색의 매끈한 덩어리, 정형화된 나무 덩어리 등 바닥에 무심히 놓여 공간의 무게를 잡아주면서 분위기를 고요하게 이완시킨다. 이렇게 무게감 있는 매스들과 이를 둘러싼 정제된 흐름으로 전반적인 공간을 구성한다. 이 낮고 무거운 덩어리들 사이로 우뚝 상승하는 대비적인 조형물을 통해 무거움을 해소시키고자 했다. 마치 자연 속에서 무심하게 자라나는 나뭇가지처럼 하늘을 향해 뻗은 형태는 은은히 반사되는 천장 면을 통해 수직적으로 확장된 공간감을 선사한다.
자연 속에서 시간이 지남에 따라 이끼가 끼고, 나이테가 늘어나듯이, 금속 표면을 녹슬게 함으로써 시간이 지남에 따라 나이를 들게 했고 정갈한 것들 사이에 섞여 존재감을 드러내고자 했다. 오브제가 관통된 천장에서는 하늘의 자연광이 떨어지듯이 빛이 전반적으로 낙하하여 시선을 뒤로 보내게 하고, 크고 높지 않은 공간 안에서 깊이 감을 느낄 수 있도록 한다. 선명한 것은 흐릿한 것과 함께 있어야 더욱 빛을 발하는 것처럼 고요한 흐림 속 뚜렷한 선과 무게들은 정제된 배경과 함께 어우러진다. 그렇게 인공적인 주변의 경계가 흐려지고, 상승하는 자연적인 선들과 단일의 화합을 이룬다.
